Gothic Clothing
Goth clothing, sometimes referred to as Gothic clothing, like the subculture of Goth itself, has roots in all sorts of other styles and fashions. However, some parts of the Goth style do have some similarities. Goth clothing is brought together through the idea of individual alienation from society. Goth clothing, moreover, reflects a mode of the macabre and the morose. Often, the look is that of a vampire or a Victorian style with added dark qualities, darker shades of reds combined with black for example. Additionally, a look of death and despair are common themes brought to the surface through this style of dress.
Though some consider the Goth clothing style as something overtly sexual in nature, the clothing represents another common ideology. That is, Goth clothing represents for the wearer a way to break away and set apart from societal norms that adhere to consumerism. Goth clothing often represents a desire to step away from this and, in some cases, personify art. The Goth subculture ideology is breaking free of society, whereas Goth clothing outwardly testifies to a new, perhaps darker, philosophy of expressing one’s self outwardly. Goth clothing, like conventional clothing, can be made, bought, or sold, in second-hand shops, clothing stores or online.
Like typical fashion, Goth clothing has both men’s and women’s varieties. Men, for example, can buy all sorts of Goth clothing, almost anywhere in the world (especially America and West and Eastern Europe). Common Goth clothing styles include black stretch jeans or leather pants; some styles being referred to as bondage pants or trousers. Some Goth clothing includes not only pants but also shorts, t-shirts and cut-off t-shirts. Often, men wear oversized hoodies, sweatshirts or sweaters. Likewise, a Goth jacket may be short or long, from an overcoat to parka. A combination of these, again worn in black or shades therein makes the best Goth clothing.

The atypical fashion of Goth clothing includes women’s trends as well, though these may be considered more sexual than true Goth (the two go hand in hand). Women’s pants include stretch jeans, often black, made of leather or even pleather. Slacks, like pants or capris, are currently trendy and evoke a certain Gothic charm. Skirts, whether short, long or knee length can be customized into Gothic clothing. Additionally, Tank tops and camis make for a summer Goth style. Often, too, women’s Goth clothing reaches back to the Victorian era. Given this, today’s Goth clothing for women include corsets, cinchers and bustier, worn with or atop a dress. Women’s Goth clothing also includes hoodies, sweaters and jackets. Ladies can also customize gloves, boots or even pumps to adhere to Goth clothing genres.

For both men and women, Goth clothing can be extended from hats to stockings, from jewelry to shoes. The only common thread holding the seams in place, however, is a look of the darker side of life—a motif that perhaps says something about death, mourning and despair. From yesterday’s literature to today’s movies—such as Tim Burton’s Batman and Edward Scissorhands—Goth culture has been permeating Goth clothing for the last twenty years. What used to be the on the fringe is now part of the fixed style of today’s fashion. Whether through a bold statement of style or a light display of attitude, Goth clothing is unique and always changing.
