Gothic Shoes
When Goth fashion, including the culture and clothing, first had its start in the post-punk era of the 1980s, there wasn’t much to be had. That is, if you went looking for Goth clothing in stores, you’d be lucky to find anything that wasn’t overly metal or grunge. Today, however, the subculture of Goth has attracted a supportive crowd, those interested in displaying their ideologies and style through clothes and especially shoes.
Gone are the days of fabricating your own Goth shoe styles (unless you want to). Today, you can buy Goth shoes at the local mall, strip mall, sidewalk sale or even online. They are everywhere, and guess what, the trend is just going to keep becoming all the rage.
Goth shoes, whether for men or women, do have some similar characteristics. The first thing you’ll notice about the shoes is the dark colors, usually black or mostly black. The black, moreover, can be shiny, with an almost polished look to a mat or flat finish. Goth shoes for women, on the one hand, sometimes includes a hint of red, pink, lavender or even plaid; they can be anything from pumps, high heels to platform shoes. Goth shoes for men, on the other hand, are generally higher cut and do not contain any other color than black; they can be anything from boots to low cut shoes. Though rules are often made to be broken (as the proverb goes), Goth shoes for men and women are not intermixed and do adhere to a style with roots in Venetian or antique design. Additionally, they will always be a statement against what it is to be conventional or normal.
Goth shoes for women can be made from leather to plastic, from suede to velvet. As often is the case with women’s attire, footwear can and do contain various colors and designs. One design, for example, that pushes what it means to be Goth is Goth purple and pink shoes. Though the design is something Goth in representation, the colors suggest a new take on what it is to be a Goth. Many women’s footwear also comes in various styles. One of the most popular today is a platform shoe. The platform may be the classic heel look, a wedge look or even a sandal look. Goth shoes, in addition, generally include various styles and cuts of boots. Whether they contain fish netting, leather, strings or straps, they will always reflect the morose and surly side of living.

Men shoes, by the same token, can come in leather, cloth, plastic, suede or other mixtures of such materials. What you generally find with men’s Goth shoes are a more studded rubber sole and more jagged appearance—a toe that squares off or a heel edge that is cut unevenly. Everything from monkey boot styles to combat boot styles falls under the same category. Sometimes, too, men’s the shoes are soft toed, steel toed or biker toed. The designs are almost always black, with one or two shades giving the shoe a mixed look. The shoes may have binds, ties, strings, leather or any number of fastenings. Men’s Goth shoes will always cater to a more risky style, denoting personal power and aspects of ruggedness. Both men and women Goth shoes reach out from the wearer to the observer in a way that other fashion modes do not. |
